detour: ARABELA

2011 May 5

With nothing better to do that weekend, my sister, her kids and I went on a road trip around Laguna. First stop was Los Banos where we ate at Kusina ni Aling Ely.  The food is served carinderia style. We ordered Pinakbet, Barbeque and Sisig.  The sisig was delicious.  It had just enough sourness. It was a bit spicy but that’s how I like my sisig—simple, tasty, spicy and sour and no add-ons such as mayo or egg needed.

But the real highlight of our trip was a little restaurant in Liliw called Arabela.  It’s located away from the hustle and bustle of major towns in Laguna.  The backdrop is a huge mountain range which makes dining there all the more appetizing.  The place is small and could prolly fit around 20-25 people. The ceiling is low.  If you’re more than 5’9, you might have to bow your head down when you stand up. The place is unpretentious.  No frills.  But I like that.  Because based from experience, the more polished the resto, the blander the food.

The place is simple and straightforward with its design yet the food is delicious.  They don’t scrimp on the ingredients.  I ordered Pasta in oil, garlic and prosciutto and my dish was overflowing with thinly sliced garlic and prosciutto.  My nephew and niece had Baked Ziti and the pasta was covered with lots of cheese.  And I haven’t started on the drinks.  I had iced mocha which I normally order hot but it was a hot day and I wanted something cold and with caffeine.  It was comparable to Starbucks and costs less than an order of frappucino there.

There are so many good things about that little quaint resto in that charming little town in Laguna but you have to find out the rest for yourselves.  So was it worth the long trip?  Very much.  In fact, I even wanted to stay the night so I can eat again in Arabela the following day.  But there was no hotel or inn nearby.
